Episode 5 P2

Mandisa Thomas is the founder and president of a secular nonprofit organization called Black Nonbelievers. The organization focuses on support for black atheists and skeptics, and the representation of African Americans in the secular space. The organization also advocates for racial justice, social awareness, LGBTQ+ equality, and minority equity.

The second part of the interview dives into Mandisa’s personal background, how she started the Black Nonbelievers organization, and how the organization impacts modern black history. She is not only a strong, dynamic, atheist leader but also a parent - our conversation touches on the ups and downs of parenting while leading an organization as a busy and outspoken activist. We talk about Mandisa’s upbringing and her parenting as an open-minded mom. We also touch on the upcoming Women of Color Beyond Belief conference and the importance of highlighting women of color on the humanist, atheist, and progressive advocacy stage. We end the interview with Mandisa sharing with us about becoming an official Humanist Celebrant.
